The beginning of your real career

Not to long ago, getting to the venerable age of 65 meant the time had come to stop working and sit in your  rocking chair on the front porch and wait for dooms day. This did not mean that you had to sit around a do nothing; you could work in the garden or do craft-work for your local social club, but it was understood your life as a wage earner was over.

A few years ago we were introduced to the idea of liberty 55. Remember that ? It was socially important to retire early, and not being able to do this meant that you hadn’t saved for retirement or that your salary was not high enough to permit you to retire, in short if you continued to work pass 55 you had probably wasted his life. To be successful from now on you had to save your money to retire, even if it meant to give up some your pleasures in life and turn to  the stock market, invest in stocks that would guaranty you a happy retirement after a short 30 years of active life.

There are however people that claim their right to work even if some would rather see them using the rocking chair. These individuals resist leaving their jobs or if not retired wish to reintegrate the work force.

They are influenced by many different motivations:

Jack: I had accumulated enough money to retire, but with the crash of the stock market and low interest rates, my life style has decreased since I retired. I absolutely have to get back to work. My life style is at stake.
Mary: I dreamt of all those golf games and the pleasures of taking care of my grand-children. I am now fed-up with golf a I feel my children are abusing of my availability to babysit their kids. Its more than time I go back to work.
Gilles: I have retired for a year now. At the beginning I loved this new life, but to be honest for the last three months I’m bored. Its time to go back to work.
John: It’s more my fellow workers that I miss, a lot more than the work. Its as if I had lost a part of my life.
Claude: I was used to concentrate on ongoing challenges. I don’t have any anymore. It leaves me with a sense of emptiness that work could fulfil
Lucie:You’ll think this is funny, but if I’m thinking of going back to work. its to get away from home. I had never realised, before I retired that my husband was so intrusive. If I don’t get back to work soon I will have to ask for a divorce.
Denis: I miss the prestige I enjoyed before i left for my retirement. people used to look up toe for advice: I was invited to social events in my region. I pinch myself every day to see if I’m still alive.
Richard: I don’t want to leave my job to retire because I’m afraid of death. My father died three months after he retired. I don’t want this to happen to me.
Marcel: It seems that the days of rest are more enjoyable when they are broken by working days. I have the impression of always being in a week-end. It becomes tiresome at length.
